Blamelessness – faultless, innocent, unblemished, without blame.
In a world filled with shame, blame and pointing fingers, I long to be seen through the eyes of grace. I am not perfect — not by a long shot — but the word of God tells me that I am chosen to be blameless. My heart skips, my shoulders relax, my eyes fill with hope at the prospect of being seen without blame! (Please don’t misconstrue blamelessness for not taking responsibility. Completely different concepts!)
Of course, translators don’t translate the original Greek word amomos identically. As I scanned several translations, I chose the verses I thought clearly exposed the heart of God for us as his children.
4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
Ephesians 1:4
8He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Corinthians 1:8-9
22Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.
Colossians 1:22
23Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. 24God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful.
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
26He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven.
Hebrews 7:26
2God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. May God give you more and more grace and peace.
1 Peter 1:2
Allow me to summarize what I hear in these verses. It was God’s idea, one he had before he created a single thing, that humanity would stand before him blameless. He also knew we would need help, so he sent his son, Jesus, to shed his blood for our cleansing. It is the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives that makes us holy and blameless. All of this is God’s idea, his initiative, his continuing work until the day we stand before him!
As I settle into the knowledge that I am seen by God, because of Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit, as blameless, I am set free to truly live. There is no fear as I come into the presence of God. Only the liberating knowledge that I am without blame because of Jesus. And I will stay that way because God is faithful to do what he says!
Take a moment to meditate on this truths found in the verses above. Come back to them throughout the day. You are without fault – blameless – before God! What does that do for you? How does it feel to know that, because of Jesus, you are without fault?
